One morning we may wake up to find the whole house buried in choko vine. But we still have a ludicrous profusion of chokos - the vine even grows across the garden gate each night, so we have to hack it back to get inside. And eating chokos - freshly picked ones are thin-skinned and far more tender than shop-bought ones. Picking the first, very tiny, mandarin of winter.Planting euphorbias, which I don't actually like much, but which do bloom towards the end of winter when there are few other perennial flowers, especially ones that need so little tending i.e.Watching others whippersnip around our rock gardens, which is a bit like a Santa Claus visit every late afternoon as I see the rocks emerge in all their rounded beauty.When the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 15cm (6in) apart along the row, removing the weaker ones. Keep the soil free of weeds at all times. Germination can be slow, taking up to six weeks. It grows well from zone 8 in the south to zone 4 or 5 in the north. It is often used in paths and lawns as it stands up well to foot traffic. If youve struggled to grow thyme or other Mediterranean herbs, pause. Its tiny leaves are bluish-green and hairy, and its blossoms are deep pink. When creeping thyme is grown in the right spot, its a low-maintenance and carefree plant. But for a week or even three, the blooms dance around the garden. Sow seeds thinly in 1cm (½in) deep drills, cover with soil and water gently. As its name suggests, Creeping Thyme is a flat ground-hugging plant usually no more than 3 high. Tree dahlias don't begin blooming here till May, and we usually get our first frost in May too, so we have a short tree dahlia flowering season. Check that there are plenty of leaves and a strong root ball. Rejoicing in the first tree dahlias, with their blue-purple ballerina skirts. Transplanting Steps Begin with a vibrant, growing thyme seedling at least 4 tall. This flat growing Thyme forms dense mats of fine fragrant dark green leaves, blanketed with rosy-purple flowers beginning in late June. This low-growing herb brightens paths and borders with aromatic foliage and delicate flowers Scent under foot and in the perennial border Good drainage.Chives: Easy to grow indoors and out, chives grow quickly unless you start them from seed. Intending to cover all the bare areas in the vegie garden with mulch to stop weeds springing up over winter, leaving lovely bare soil for September sowings. Basil: One of the most expensive herbs to purchase.
